Zheng He led the most advanced naval fleet the world had seen during his time. According to Columbia University, The Ming Dynasty began orders to "construct special 'Treasure Ships,' ships over 400 feet long, 160 feet." Besides their impressive size, these treasure ships also had the latest technical advancements in nautical engineering. They implemented double hulls and water-sealed decks, and their sails negated the need for entire ship floors of rowers. This allowed for much more manpower to be concentrated in other affairs. Every ship was accompanied by several smaller ones, sometimes carrying only drinking water and raw supplies.
